Virak can take the major prize this time.

Having twice chased home the improving Wakanda this season Virak can gain deserved compensation by taking the Peter Marsh chase at Haydock today. Two from two at the course and he acts on testing ground make him a sound each way proposition. Fungal Bay is capable of winning a  prize like this too. Decent hurdler Reve De Sivola has yet to convince over fences.

Bristol De Mai is a bold jumper who will take all the beating in the 1.30. The same can be said for Corrin Wood though he’s a riskier proposition over the smaller obstacles but worth a punt in the 1.00.

Will this be the day they pull stumps on The New Ones third champion hurdle bid. I wouldn’t be keen to back him odds on today.

Vintage Clouds was caught flat footed at the last here in December but this longer trip should prevent a repeat and he is a confident tip to end the meeting on a high under Danny Cook.

At Ascot Un De Sceaux should confirm his Champion chase supremacy in the Clarence House chase.

Zulu Oscar should be suited by this longer trip in the 2.25 where Value At Risk is of interest following his unsuccessful ventures over fences.

It’s difficult not be captured by another Harry Fry runner Desert Queen and she could upset the Mullins hotoot if Noel Fehiky can nurse her home.

Salubrious looks to have a great each way chance in the 3.35 for Paul. Nicholls.

At Taunton Blue Buttons (below) can complete a succesful day for Harry Fry.

Wakanda can take the Silver Cup back up North

Readers won’t be surprised that I’m not planning to desert my favourite Wakanda as he embarks to plunder Ascot’s Silver cup on a rare excursion down south by his trainer Sue Smith.

Winner of the Rehearsal Chase 4 weeks ago he is still on the upgrade and is a gutsy front runner who might just repel all challengers for his biggest pay day yet.

Wakanda leads Virak over the last at Newcastle 4 weeks ago.

The Young Master was my Hennessy tip and could well make amends here whilst Virak will have his backers to get revenge on Wakanda for their last meeting.

Elsewhere Voix D”Eau is my nap in the Graduation Chase and Hurricane Hollow looks on a handy mark for each way backers in the Ladbroke where Rayvin Black is worth an interest too.

Cloudy Too could make it a memorable day for Sue Smith by taking the Tommy Whittle at Haydock in what looks a sub standard renewal.

Today’s selections :

Revitalised Cue Card can thwart Conti

Cue Card and Paddy Brennan win the 2015 Charlie Hall chase at Wetherby - photo JueBillRacing

The impressive way Cue Card repelled all challenges at Wetherby 3 weeks ago suggests he can thwart Silviniaco Conti’s bid for a 3rd Betfair Chase at Haydock today. Conti recovered from a lack lustre Gold Cup run to win by a head from Ballynagour at Aintree but that doesn’t make him an odds on chance here.

Elsewhere at Haydock Gunner Fifteen and Staidnahanna look sound bets whilst Lucinda Russell’s No Deal can maintain the stables good record in staying events at this course.

At Ascot all eyes will be on the exciting Vautour.

Relentless Dreamer can finally fulfil his early promise and Desert Queen could leave his previous runs behind at a good price if settling.

Todays selections

Dynaste primed for big run in Charlie Hall

Wetherby - 11th January 2014

An excellent 7 runner field for the Charlie Hall at Wetherby today, a race I previewed here earlier in the week. Dynaste and Cue Card are my two against the field with the former a hopeful rather than confident tip.

A very good supporting card where the novice chase sees Zeroshadesofgrey make his debut over fences and will be tested by both Southfield Royale and Beg To Differ.

No fewer than 7 of my 50 to follow run today including 3 in the highly competitive 3 mile handicap chase at Ascot. Le Reve is a favourite of mine and is just preferred to Virak and Present View today.

Jumped slowly in rear: a meander through the world of the staying handicap chase.
