Chepstow and Hexham 08/10/16

Virgilio was the star at Newton Abbot yesterday putting in a slick jumping display that suggests he could  go far as a chaser.

Today is the traditional first day of the jump season proper and Chepstow doesn’t disappoint whilst there is an interesting card at Hexham.

Ballyoptic, Rock The Kasbah and Colin’s Sister represent my 50 to follow but none are shoe ins on their seasonal debuts.

Viva Steve can shine Bright

Viva Steve can be forgiven his last run and can take the Bet Bright chase at Kempton today. He had been impressive this season prior to that not least over course and distance. Le Reve returned to his best last time and also has an each way chance.

The Eider should thankfully be run in less gruelling conditions than is often the case and Oliver Sherwood s Beforeall is my main pick with Sue Smith’s dour stayed Lackamon likely to be placed.

Sue has a nice prospect in Delusionifgrandeur who should return to winning ways under the in form Danny Cook if this doesn’t come too soon.

Draytonian (below) is a nice sort and can take the 2.20 at Newcastle.

The pick at Chepstow could be Paul Nicholls Arpege D’Arlene in the 3.45

Cogry looks primed for Welsh National bid.

Cogry , one of my 50 to follow this season looks primed for a big run in the rescheduled Welsh Grand National today. The 7 year old has long been well regarded by connections and conditions should be ideal. Dangers are all around including stable mate Tour Des Champs and Shotgun Paddy who are both worth each way interest in what will be a gruelling contest. But Cogry is my first choice who will hopefully complete a 54/1 “Christmas” double after Cue Card landed the first leg in the King George

Elsewhere another 50 to follow horse Le Reve can return to winnung ways at Kempton 3.10 after two below par runs. Whilst Brother Tedd is each way value in the Lanzarote hurdle at 2.35.

Carole’s Destrier should be worth the wait

Whilst all eyes will be on the Tingle Creek and the two chases over the National course it could pay to leave something aside for Carole’s Destrier in the finale at Sandown. Neil Mulhollands Grand National (50 to follow) hope has a touch of class and the stamina test over a right hand track looks perfect for him. Restless Harry should be spot on for his recent run and can chase him home.

The Henry V111 sees As Dr Mee and Bristol De Mai go head to head with Willows Saviour a danger too. Bristol Dr Mau is one of my 50 to follow but preference on this right hand track today is for As De Mee in a mouth watering contest.

The Tingle Creek has some well publicised absentees and can go to Vibrato Valtat who can be a tricky ride but is only 6 and still improving.

At Aintree the testing conditions make another of my 50 to follow horses Goonyella a good each way prospect in the Becher Chase where the youngster Algernon Pazham can also be placed.

In the other race over the National fences he rejuvenated Double Ross looks a solid each way hope in the Grand Sefton though vulnerable to a well handicapped horse such as Mwaleshi.

Don Poli is my ante post interest in the Gold Cup after his festival victory in March. Today’s run in the Lotto chase is a stepping stone to that and is best watched in a race that includes National hero Many Clouds.

The fare elsewhere is moderate but Kingswell Theatre is a decent sort if coping with Chepstows heavy ground.

At Wetherby Sue Smith can continue her good form with Vendor and Clan William the pick.

Sunday’s should be more like this

Superb jump racing yesterday at Chepstow where Dropout Joe (8/1 Hills AM) saved the blogs bacon with a bold front running display under Aidan Coleman. Credit goes to ATR for showing what Channel 4 chose to ignore.

At Hexham Present Lodger won in good style beating the very game Brother Scott. Both will win their fair share of handicaps this season.

Today Chepstow show the way again with a very good card. Hopefully other tracks will start to put on decent racing for true racing fans on a Sunday rather than just pampering to the lager lout brigade on Saturdays.

Today 3 of my 50 to follow race with Emerging Talent fancied to break his maiden tag.

Whilst I think Top Gamble may be more primed for the feature chase than the talented Present View.

And they’re off … the jumps season gathers pace.

The first Saturday in October traditionally marks the start of the jump season proper. I recall back in the 80s buying the Haig Annual from WH Smiths and using their ratings to back Dawn Breaker and Romping To Work in a double. The rest as they say is history … I was hooked.

There is plenty to wet the appetite at Chepstow supported by a decent card at Hexham.
