Visited on the Thursday and on Ladies day on the eve of National and also Becher chase meeting. Great to walk National Course. Train from Central Station best option for National Meeting. Try the tradtional The Globe pub near Central station for a pint 8/10

Ayr – last visit 21-22/04/17

Attended the 2 day Scottish Grand National meeting. Jumps track is some way from stands but good viewing and atmosphere if a little crowded on the Saturday. Lawns area by the Paddock is a good spot away from the  crowds.8/10

 Beverley – last visit 30/05/11

Decent viewing as runners climb up hill in home straight. Beverley itself worth a visit. 7/10

Cartmel – last visit 16/07/16

Beautiful location at end of village main street. Can get congested on racedays.

Stuck Toffee Pudding ship us a must. Also Unsworth micro brewery worth sampling. 8/10

Catterick – last visit 03/07/13

imageSoft spot for this course as it was first course I visited back in 70s. Intimate paddock and decent view from Paddock enclosure. 8/10

Cheltenham – 15/03/13, 11/03/14, 10/03/15, 14-15/03/16

imageThe theatre of dreams of jump racing. First visited Festival in 2013 and wasn’t disappointed. Can get congested and not all are there for the racing which can be frustrating. 9/10

Chester

Excellent viewing and close to City Centre. Paddock accessed via tunnel near winning post. 7/10

Doncaster

Been a few years since I visited and both the course and the town lacked warmth and soul. In fairness it may have improved since then so don’t let my view put you off. 5/10

Haydock

Decent view and facilities. Used to walk to course from Newton Le Willows rail station in my youth Was a long walk back after a poor days punting! 6/10

Hereford – 05/08/16

Passed on the way home from a week in Pembrokeshire. Course is close to the City centre and Hereford FC. Golf course in centre of course and Leisure Centre on bend out of the home straight. Due to start racing again in autumn 2016  and geographically is well placed for many stables.

 Hexham – 04/10/13, 03/10/14, 02

My favourite course. Great viewing in a wonderful rural setting. Friendly and warm despite its exposed hilltop location. Highly recommend for a day’s proper no frills racing. 10/10
Kelso – 29/12/13

image

Another decent course in beautiful surroundings. View from stand roof is second to none. 8/10

Pontefract

Decent view despite it being a 2 mile circuit. Close to M62 for easy access. 6/10

Redcar

Not my favourite having only viewed from the course enclosure where the runners come at you head on. 5/10

Ripon

Good family day out in pleasant surroundings. 7/10

Sedgefield – first visit  01/09/16

Close to the A1, very good viewing, reasonable facilities. Down to earth jumps venue 7/10

Stratford – 21/07/13

imageAttended on Ladies day and found it a friendly compact course. Paddock in front of stand a plus and a decent although a lot of starRing devoted to premier enclosure. 7/10

Thirsk last visited 27/05/15

Good no nonsense racecourse within walking distance of market town. 7/10

Wetherby – last visit 31/10/15

Facilities continue to improve and decent viewing. Adjacent to A1. Needs to focus on establishing as a top jumps venue rather than flirting with mundane flat racing in a county not short of flat racing venues. 8/10

York – last visit 8th July 2016
image

View from the Old County stand

Top racing venue with great facilities and viewing. Top quality racing. Music nights are good too! Buses run from train station although it is walkable. The York Tap adjacent to the station is perfect for racegoers who like their real ale. 9/10
